M1 should be "make one". Hope this helps. Sheri

M1 is make one which is increasing 1 stitch. You can do this by knitting into the front and back of the stitch. I don't know if I can describe correctly a true M1. If you hold your 2 needles slightly apart you will see a stand of yarn, a bar, if you pick that stitch up with your left needle going from front to back, then knit it through the back you have created a knit M1. For a purl M1, pick that bar up going from back to front and then purl the front leg. If this doesn't make sense you can find lots of instructions online for this. HTH.

It is so hard for us seniors to read white on black. Please with courtesy in mind print black print on white background for us oldsters. Many thanks. it's sooo difficult.

Hi! I have a basket almost done but I'm confused about the handle. Why do you do it with passing the yarn & then slipping the stitches. It leaves these strings of yarn in front of the handle. I thought maybe it was trying to shape the handle round, but it's not. I really want to finish it! Could you possibly email me privately? This is a great pattern! Your site is fun. I loved your 100 things list. I can so relate! :-)

Sorry Susan J, I didn't see your email addy. The handle is like a twisted i-cord which I think gives it more stability. So you'll knit 6, bring the yarn forward, slip 5 stitches. When you go to do the next row the yarn will be in the middle of the work. Knit your first stitch, pulling a little tight. I should have made a note that it will look wrong for the first inch or two. Once you move further on the handle it will settle down into place and you'll see something that is like 2 tubes with a criss-cross joining them. HTH.

This was posted so long ago, I will be thrilled to see a response and that you and your daughter (?) are doing well.

This will be my first attempt to knit a bowl and felt it - my question is to skip the handle do I just stop before those instructions? thank you for posting this pattern.
